Long story short, something very heavy, bipedal and barefoot ran right past my shelter I have when I went to bed. Didn’t see or smell anything, just heard the footsteps stomp past me. A companion was growled at by a deep-voiced, unseen animal from above nearby. Felt like I was being watched the whole time, an odd feeling, but noticeable. Not much detail more than that, other than we were the only people out there all weekend, drizzling rain, I was the last one to go to bed so I know it wasn’t one of us. Whatever it was ran through one way, never came back. Mostly just telling you to let you know that Waiparous could be a good spot if you wanted to check it out. Only about 45 minutes outside of Calgary. I later learned that about a year prior to my experience, a double sighting was reported in the same area.
We were just camping there, no hunting or even firearms for that matter. It happened the second night I was there, but a friend had been there for about 3 days when I arrived. The young friend who had been growled at was riding a small quad in the woods that was prone to stalling out. He’d have to get off, lift the seat and tinker under there to get it running again. It was during one of those moments when he said he heard a deep growl, but was higher than him (in a flat area), and not below him, like a normal animal growl would be. He quickly got his quad running and came back, though he was surprisingly unbothered by it. I do remember now that on that day there had been 2 quaders that passed by early in the afternoon, but those were the only people we saw. All the other campsites leading up to ours (which I believe is the last spot on the road for such a thing) were empty.
